No-confidence notice filed

The Star, 11 July 2008

IN AN unprecedented move, the Opposition has submitted a notice to the Dewan Rakyat to debate on an emergency motion of no-confidence against Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and his Cabinet.

Opposition Leader Datin Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail filed the motion at the Speaker’s office at 3.45pm, accompanied by other Pakatan Rakyat leaders including PKR vice-president Azmin Ali, DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang and PAS secretary-general Datuk Kamaruddin Jaafar.

“We have met with the Speaker to explain our reasons and we will leave it to him to decide on whether to allow the motion,” she said, adding that the motion would also heighten the feeling that the country needed a change.

  • Very interesting development we Malaysians have been waiting for – not that we are anti-establishment, but because we care for the establishment (irregardless of whoever runs it).
  • An acid test for Pak Lah and team.
  • Most probable scenario:
  1. The Speaker will disallow the motion, which he or other Speakers before him did – as any motion against the Government has never been given the go-ahead (Speakers are from the Government, remember?).
  2. If it’s allowed (but I’m dead certain that it won’t), it will decide who gets to lead the country.
  3. If it’s allowed (but I’m dead certain that it won’t), the House won’t pass it, as Najib, as the BN Chief Whip, will whip up the BN MPs nice and proper before the debate on the motion (you know la all BN MPs are selfish, greedy and possess no balls.
  4. If it’s allowed (but I’m dead certain that it won’t), how is the Opposition going to garner enough support (SAPP’s support is now questionable).
  5. Status quo remains. The Opposition will still be barking like a dog; whilst Pak Lah gets to get back to his usual sleeping posture - irregardless of at the official functions or not; days or nights.
